anyone who has left a flash drive or old hard drive in cold storage for extended time will asure you there is a good reason to keep magnetic & optical data around, even if they are terribly slow.

I thought everyone knew this? it went punch-card -> tape -> hdd the reason tape and optical are good for archival is that they retain data for a very long time with little degregation. A hdd or ssd after a few years of not being powered on will start to "forget". The ecc that we have can bring lots of stuff back. The average person keeps their drives plugged in always to their machine so its always getting power. However a common thing for people to do is get a camera card or flash drive and store old photos or tax documents and they leave it in a drawer for half a decade before they realize that some of the data is lost. Tape and Mdisks are generally considered better for archival because they can be stored without use for a millennia in the case of mdisk and half century for tape.
